Calf Reduction

Intervento per la riduzione del polpaccio

Botulin Toxin has many different uses, including the correction of muscle hypertrophy in different parts of the body like, for example, the calves. The result is visible already 3-4 days after the treatment. It is an outpatient surgery and requires no anesthesia. The complications are minimal. Some edema, when it occurs, will anyway disappear within 24-48 hours. Some discomfort when walking might stay for 24 hours. It is a simple and quick procedure and it leaves no visible scars. To keep the result obtained, the treatment has to be repeated every 8-12 months.

The procedure

The injection of Botulinum Toxin is an outpatient treatment, which does not require local anesthesia in the area to be treated.

The effect of the Botulinum Toxin is to weaken the affected muscles by peripheral facial nerve palsy (paralysis), and, as a consequence, the muscle cannot contract and the overlying skin is stretched.
The effect of the injection is temporary. It appears 3-4 days after the injection and can last from 8 to 12 months.
It is an outpatient treatment consisting of small injections.

After the procedure

The Botulinum Toxin procedure is a minimally invasive and quick treatment, giving a very good result in correcting muscle hypertrophy.

Contraindications (conditions to withhold the treatment)

Absolute Contraindications:

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the components (botulinum toxin, human albumin, sodium chloride)
  • Neuromuscular diseases (such as myasthenia gravis, etc...)
  • Patients treated with aminoglycoside antibiotics or Spectinomycin
  • Presence of infections or inflammation in the area to be treated
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Relative contraindications:

Possible complications

The side effects are normally minimal: occasionally swelling and small hematomas in the injection site might occur, but they subsidize within 24 to 48 hours from the treatment; some discomfort when walking can stay for 24 hours.
Occasionally headache and pain might arise.

Recovery time (back to social life)

After the injection, it is important not to massage the treated areas for at least 4 hours and to practice any sports for a week.
